The term came to be associated with an excessively subservient person. The book and the plays it inspired helped popularize a number of negative stereotypes about black people, including that of the namesake character ' Uncle Tom'. The influence attributed to the book was so great that a likely apocryphal story arose of Abraham Lincoln meeting Stowe at the start of the Civil War and declaring, 'So this is the little lady who started this great war.' It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In the United States, Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel and the second best-selling book of the 19th century, following the Bible. The novel focuses on the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave around whom the stories of the other characters revolve. She wrote the sentimental novel to depict the reality of slavery while also asserting that Christian love could overcome slavery. Stowe, a Connecticut-born woman of English descent, was part of the religious Beecher family and an active abolitionist. Published in two volumes in 1852, the novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the U.S., and is said to have 'helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War'. it sounds like it's going to be good but it was so awful i couldn't even make myself finish it.Uncle Tom's Cabin or, Life Among the Lowly is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe.

amazon ought to fix their blurb on this book - very misleading. book seems to be written for teenagers by a teenager. more t the rest of the description with the name of the series. Review 2: well, the blurb was the best part about this book. But I applaud her effort and see potential for growth. And the author's writing style was just not as polished as I would like - frequently immature, overly flowery and eye-roll inducing (for me).

There were numerous little subplots and characters that were never fleshed out, making them essentially unnecessary.

Less adapted to the present day WAY too quickly and well, the insta-romance with Austin was forced and unlikely, and everything just felt rushed. Time travel is tricky to do well, and unfortunately, it didn't happen here. It had all the elements to make a good book, but the execution fell short. Review 1: While not terrible, this book just didn't hit the right notes for me.
